I want to begin this post by saying the big reasons Adam and I want to handle our finances really well are two fold: #1: It’s God’s money and we want to be good stewards of it, and #2: we want to give money away like crazy people in the future. We both have hearts for orphans and widows (again, goes back to the Bible where we’re told to take care of those people especially because they typically don’t have anyone caring for them).
We began following Dave Ramsey’s ( Dave Ramsey’s Class ) principles to get out of debt, save, and build wealth so we can give later down the road. This pic is from a few years ago:
This is the system we’ve previously used:
We currently live pretty far away from our bank so getting there to take out cash has been quite frustrating. We had to come up with a better way to keep up with our “cash envelopes” without actually taking out cash. So, here’s what we came up with.
We sat down and wrote out our normal monthly budget, including those items we’d spend cash on. Instead of having physical envelopes, we looked at apps on our smart phones. We hunted. For days. We did NOT want an app that connected directly to our bank account. We only really wanted an app for keeping track of “cash spending.” We finally found one and have been using it for a while now. It’s called:
Envelopes: Budget Manager and looks like this (these are not our personal numbers):
Oh app, how I love thee. Let me count the ways:
- Create as many envelopes as you like
- Give them all a color to separate them easily
- NOT connected to your bank account
- Super easy to edit amounts
- Can be locked with passcode
So, we use our credit card to make the actual purchases and then track the spending here. At the end of the month, anything left over is put into savings. BAM! It works, it’s easy, it’s super cheap, and organized. Plus, I love the color-coding ’cause I’m girly that way. I hope this helps you, too!
