How many of y’all are watching your budgets and using the Dave Ramsey principles of using cash only for non-bill purchases? *Raises hands way up there!* If you have no idea what I’m talking about, simply google it and you’ll quickly understand. We are going back to the CASH ONLY system starting September 1st and I’m prepared this time!! You, too, can make this simple wallet by following my steps.
Items you’ll need include:
- 9″ zippers (1 per desired envelope)
- Fabric scissors
- Coordinating fat quarters
- Sew In Velcro
- Zipper foot (if you have one)
- Extra firm interfacing (can get at Walmart or fabric store)
- Straight Pins
Okay let’s do this! It’ll be so much easier to make than you might think.
For the first part of this project, we’ll be making the outside wallet portion. Measure a rectangle piece of firm interfacing at 9.75″ HIGH X 8.5″ WIDE. Cut it out. Do the same for the 2 pieces of fabric you want to be your outer fabric. I’m choosing the “birds” you see in the pic:
Also cut 2 pieces of the same fabric 2.5″ WIDE X 4.5″ HIGH for the tab along with the same size firm interfacing.
Layer your small pieces like this: Take your two outer fabric pieces and put them together RIGHT sides facing each other. Then place the interfacing on top and pin into place:
Sew up the 3 sides that are pinned leaving the 4th un-sewn so you can turn it inside out. Turn it inside out and top stitch all 3 sides:
Now it’s time to attach some velcro. Cut a piece 2″ LONG and attach it to one side of your tab. Make sure to sew around the entire rectangle so it won’t come up after use:
Now it’s time to attach your tab to the outer portion of the wallet. Make your layers like this: Take 1 piece of fabric and your cut interfacing and layer them together where the WRONG side of the fabric is on top of the interfacing. Then lay your tab on one of the sides like this:
Sew the tab onto the 2 layers like this:
Now layer your next piece of fabric on top like this:
You’re going to sew this all the way around EXCEPT for the end OPPOSITE of the tab. Leave that side open:
Clip the corners and turn it RIGHT-SIDE out:
Using your fingers, close the other end by folding it down inside itself (use your pins to help you keep it closed while you sew – DO NOT SEW OVER PINS). Sew shut and iron flat
Now let’s get started on the envelopes (I’m making 6). Cut 6 pieces all of these measurements – 8.25″ HIGH X 8″ WIDE (ignore that it shows 8. Just cut 6):
Take 1 zipper and lay it TEETH DOWN onto a piece of your cut fabric rectangle like this:
Sew it into place and do the same with another coordinating piece on the other side of the zipper:
Now take another zipper and lay it TEETH DOWN onto another side of the fabric and sew into place:
Now take that second fabric piece, fold it over to meet the zipper and sew it into place:
Open the zippers half way and sew down each side closing envelopes folding the TEETH DOWN and clip excess:
Flip it inside out. Sew this portion into your cover like this:
Repeat this for as many envelopes as you’d like (I’ll repeat this to make 6 envelopes).
Okay LAST STEP is putting on other part of velcro to your cover and you’re DONE!!
I’m so excited to be this organized about our cash system plus it’s so pretty!!
