One of the ways our family saves money is that Adam and I cut the children’s hair. He cuts the boys while I cut mine and Libby’s (Adam shaves his head).
Because we live in South Florida, it stays pretty hot and humid. The boys do better with short hair that they can keep clean more easily and the air can help their heads stay cool.
Adam uses the clippers and each time he cuts their hair, he gets better. With practice, he’s learning which guards use and how to cut around their necks/ears.
Since Libby is Chinese, her hair is something very different that mine. I have thick, dry, course curly hair. Libby has fine, straight, shiny hair with lots of body. Cutting my own curly hair is pretty easy for me. I just go through and cut each curl where it lies. I avoid getting the dreaded triangle shape to my hair so I cut short layers around my face.
But Libby’s hair requires more skill than I have so I turned to YouTube. I started watching videos on how to cut a bob hairstyle. I wanted to avoid an inverted bob so I watched a ton of videos, took a deep breath and went for it!!
While I cut my hair dry, I need to cut her hair while it’s wet. So I gave it a good wash, parted it into sections and started in the back. I cut each section slowly and carefully while she watched a movie on my iPad. I cut about 5 inches off.
I left it too long, so I went for it a second time. That’s the thing about learning to cut hair. Just don’t go too short and you can always cut more off. I cut off about 2 more inches. Before it dried, it looked like this (which was fine but not the look we were going for):
Then I dried it and let the body do it’s thang and it looked perfect!!
Between the children and myself we save a TON of money every year. Just head to YouTube, find some awesome tutorials and give it a go! It’s so fun learning a new skill, especially when it can help you save a lot of money.
