Several years ago, I saw some baby shoes on Pinterest and went GAH GAH over them. Tiny cute little fabric shoes for baby’s sweet feet? Absa-toodle-oot-lee! Sign me up! I decided to teach myself how to make them. I sought out tutorials and patterns but very few sights were offering them free anymore and who could blame them? As pattern designers, we spend hours upon hours perfecting our creations so I totally understand wanting to be paid for your work. I have decided to offer my baby shoe pattern FREE to my readers!
Please keep in mind, this tutorial is a result of MONTHS of work so I ask that you not sell these creations and use for personal use only. Let’s not break any laws, mkay?
To start, I will teach you how to make these super cute slip on bow shoes. At a later date, I’ll teach you how to make adorable Mary Janes.
Click HERE to download the pattern from my shop for FREE! These will create 3-6 month shoes. I have found this is the perfect size for baby shower gifts. Simply complete the checkout process and it’ll arrive in your email. Print it off, cut it out and come back here.
This will seem like a super long post but I believe in having LOTS of pictures for a sewing tutorial so it feels like I’m right beside you guiding you through every step.
These are the supplies you’ll need including a sewing machine:
- The pattern
- fabric scissors
- seam ripper
- 1 fat quarter fabric (available in Walmart, Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s)
- Accessories like bows or lace
Take your fat quarter and fold it twice so that you’ll end up with 4 (FOUR) layers of fabric. Then put your pattern pieces on top and pin down (you will end up with 4 top/side pieces and 4 sole pieces:
Cut out your two pattern pieces:
This is what you will end up with:
Now watch closely. For the sole pieces, place them WRONG sides facing each other in 2 sets. Then place toe/side pieces RIGHT sides facing each other in 2 sets like this:
Now pin these 2 sides together to hold in place so you can sew around where I’m pointing with the red pen:
Now sew around and you’ll end up with this:
Now take the 2 ends and pin them together so you can sew them:
Now take these two ends that you’ve sewn and turn them right side out. Then press together like this (I pin them just to hold them for the next step):
Turn the entire piece inside out. This is what you should have so far.
Place the toe portion ONTO the shoe portion and pin down all around. This is where you will sew the entire shoe together! EEEEK! You’re almost done!
Sew all the way around making sure you catch all 4 layers of fabric or you’ll end up with holes in the shoes:
This is what you should have:
Now clip the extra fabric making sure NOT to cut any of the threads:
Turn your shoe inside out:
Now we just add the elastic and accessories. Simply cut your elastic to size, pin in place and sew to the shoe. Then attach your bow by hand sewing it on:
Repeat these steps for the other shoe and marvel at your work!
